Equinox VGM is currently inviting applications for a Heavy Duty Apprentice Mechanic (3rd or 4th year) to join our growing team as the company transitions from mine construction to mine operations.
Position Summary
The Heavy Duty Apprentice Mechanic (3rd or 4th year) is a team member of the Maintenance department and is accountable for repairs, troubleshooting, adjustments, overhauls, and maintaining mobile heavy-duty equipment. This role must ensure work is performed in accordance with health, safety,and environmental and legislative requirements.
This position is located at the Mine site, working on a 14 days in/14 days out rotation.
Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
Be a courageous health, safety, and environment advocate, adhere to and promote health, safety and environmental standards, policies, and procedures.
Demonstrate and promote a respectful and healthy work environment at all times.
Promote a proactive approach of continuous improvement by reporting all Health, Safety, and Environment incidents and communicate solutions.
Participate in Health, Safety, and Environment initiatives, start each task with a field level risk assessment, review, and investigation where required.
Inspect, repair, rebuild, overhaul, and perform routine maintenance work on mobile machinery and equipment in a safe effective manner under the supervision of a journeyperson.
Perform equipment servicing IE filter and fluid changes with a focus on defect identification and correction.
Diagnose faults or malfunctions to determine extent of repairs required on various types of Mobile Equipment. Enter all details of the repairs into the MMS system.
Troubleshoot and adjust equipment. Repair or replace defective parts, components, or systems, using a variety of electronic troubleshooting tools, hand, and power tools.
Test repaired equipment for proper performance and to ensure adherence to the manufacturers' specifications with emphasis on Safe operation.
Respond to breakdowns to troubleshoot, identify any parts required and complete any repairs or installations needed. Document these repairs in the work order, so the work order can be completed.
Conduct inspections of equipment, tools, site level risk assessment of the work area, and complete all documentations.
Operate hoisting and lifting devices when trained to do so, to position machinery and parts during the installation and repair of machinery.
Work with outside contractors and service providers as required.
Performs various physical duties.
Actively participate in orientation and training programs.
Conduct final inspections to ensure that each work order information has been entered and completed correctly and all safety standards have been met.
Conduct daily inspections of the work area. Correct any concerns found.
Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
Working in inclement weather.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Required:
Have accumulated at least 4000 documented heavy duty equipment repair hours toward a Journey Person mechanical (Red Seal) Certification.
Experience maintaining and repairing excavators, dozers, loaders, cranes, graders, haul trucks, highway vehicles, and other mining equipment.
Experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment.
Experience in dealing with contract services and OEM manufacturer.
Experience working in a remote industrial environment is preferred.
Skills and Knowledge:
Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental requirements at remote sites.
Relevant qualifications in appropriate area of expertise.
Knowledge of the OHS, mining, and construction regulations.
Effective time management and organizational skills and able to manage multiple priorities.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, prints, technical drawings, schematics, and procedural manuals.
Outstanding communication (oral/written) and computer skills required.
Strong team building skills.
A valid driver license and a driver’s abstract.
